What is Prinsjesdag?

Prinsjesdag (Prince’s Day) is held on the third Tuesday of September every year. In a special ceremony with all members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, the King delivers the Troonrede (Speech from the Throne), which informs of the government plans for the next parliamentary year. The budget is also officially presented by the Minister of Finance.

The Troonrede is usually delivered in the Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights), but due to the ongoing renovation of the Binnenhof (where the Ridderzaal is located) it is now held in the nearby Koninklijke Schouwburg. Princess Amalia is also in attendance, being the eldest child of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima and the future Queen.

Before delivering the Troonrede, the King and Queen make a tour from the Royal Palace on Noordeinde to the Ridderzaal (now the Koninklijke Schouwburg) in a carriage. Many people gather along the route to watch the procession. Female members of Parliament usually wear a fancy dress and hat.

After the King has delivered the Troonrede, the chairman shouts “Lang leve de Koning” (long live the King). The audience then replies with “Hoera, hoera, hoera” (hooray) in honor of the King.

Once the King and Queen are back at the Royal Palace, they and other members of the Royal Family wave to the crowd in the ‘balkon scène’ (balcony scene).
