A bank card in the Netherlands is often referred to as a pin card or pin pass. You can use it for regular payments, contactless (wireless) payments, and various banking services.

At the kassa (checkout) in most shops, you’ll find a small numeric keypad. To pay with your debit card, you insert the card and enter your PIN code (Personal Identification Number). The amount you spend is deducted from your account immediately. For small purchases, you can simply hold your card against the reader instead of inserting it into the machine. This contactless method, known as wireless paying, completes the transaction within seconds. The lights on the reader will confirm that the payment has been approved. For higher amounts, you can still use the contactless feature, but you will be asked to enter your PIN code for security.

You can also use your pin card at ATMs throughout the country. Be aware that withdrawal limits may be lower when using an ATM that does not belong to your own bank, and you may be charged an additional fee. Your pin card and PIN code are also required to operate your internetbankieren (online banking) login device, which you will use for secure access to your bank’s online services.

In daily life, the pin card is essential. Most shops, cafés, and supermarkets prefer card payments over cash, and many no longer accept cash at all. Contactless payments are widely used, and mobile payment options such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are also common. As a result, having a functioning Dutch bank card and knowing how to use it will make everyday transactions much easier.
